What We're Targeting
Redfish
Perfect for Everyone
The main event in the Delacroix marsh. Redfish are aggressive, hard fighters, and they live in the shallow marsh water year-round. The bull reds that show up in Venice in summer and fall are in a different category entirely - 20 to 40 pounds on light tackle.
Speckled Trout
Spring & Early Summer
One of the most popular inshore species in Louisiana, and for good reason - they bite readily, they're great table fare, and they fight well above their weight. Spring and early summer is when they're most active in the marsh.
Black Drum
Fall & Winter
Big, powerful fish that stack up in the marsh in cooler months. Black drum don't get enough credit - they're strong fighters and excellent eating. A good target when the trout slow down.
Sheepshead
Winter & Spring
One of the best-tasting fish in the marsh and trickier to catch than people expect. Sheepshead hang around structure and have a knack for stealing bait. Satisfying when you get one.
Flounder
Fall
Flat, fast, and excellent on the table. Flounder are a bonus species in the marsh - not always what we're targeting, but a welcome addition to the cooler when they show up.

Captain Joe Ezell
I grew up fishing farm ponds and lakes in Southeast Mississippi - bass, bream, catfish - balancing a tackle box from the handlebars of my bike. After college and a career in sales, my wife Brenda booked an inshore charter in 2008 that changed the direction of everything that came after.
By 2012 I had my first bay boat. By 2015 I had my USCG captain's license and a piece of property in Delacroix with a burned-out trailer and enough overgrowth to take a year to clear. I built the operation from the ground up on one idea: that the best days on the water come from a guide who cares more about your trip than you do.
Today I run Whiskey Bayou Charters full time out of the marsh in St. Bernard Parish. Forty-five minutes from New Orleans, in water I know as well as anyone fishing it. The grin I get when a cork goes down is the same one I had as a kid on that bicycle.

A few things people usually ask
If it is not a severe downpour with lightning, the captain may fish (some of our best catches come in inclement weather). However, if I see that the weather is dangerous (lightning, strong winds) or we are not able to fish, we will gladly reschedule or refund your deposit. The guide will make the call…
