What We're Targeting

red fish img

Redfish

Perfect for Everyone

The main event in the Delacroix marsh. Redfish are aggressive, hard fighters, and they live in the shallow marsh water year-round. The bull reds that show up in Venice in summer and fall are in a different category entirely - 20 to 40 pounds on light tackle.

speckled trout img

Speckled Trout

Spring & Early Summer

One of the most popular inshore species in Louisiana, and for good reason - they bite readily, they're great table fare, and they fight well above their weight. Spring and early summer is when they're most active in the marsh.

black drum img

Black Drum

Fall & Winter

Big, powerful fish that stack up in the marsh in cooler months. Black drum don't get enough credit - they're strong fighters and excellent eating. A good target when the trout slow down.

sheepshead img

Sheepshead

Winter & Spring

One of the best-tasting fish in the marsh and trickier to catch than people expect. Sheepshead hang around structure and have a knack for stealing bait. Satisfying when you get one.

flounder img

Flounder

Fall

Flat, fast, and excellent on the table. Flounder are a bonus species in the marsh - not always what we're targeting, but a welcome addition to the cooler when they show up.

Big Swamp Redfish with Captain Joe Ezell of Whiskey Bayou Charters

Captain Joe Ezell of Whiskey Bayou Charters puts the Headin' South team on big redfish in Delacroix, LA.

meet the captain

Captain Joe Ezell

I grew up fishing farm ponds and lakes in Southeast Mississippi - bass, bream, catfish - balancing a tackle box from the handlebars of my bike. After college and a career in sales, my wife Brenda booked an inshore charter in 2008 that changed the direction of everything that came after.

By 2012 I had my first bay boat. By 2015 I had my USCG captain's license and a piece of property in Delacroix with a burned-out trailer and enough overgrowth to take a year to clear. I built the operation from the ground up on one idea: that the best days on the water come from a guide who cares more about your trip than you do.

Today I run Whiskey Bayou Charters full time out of the marsh in St. Bernard Parish. Forty-five minutes from New Orleans, in water I know as well as anyone fishing it. The grin I get when a cork goes down is the same one I had as a kid on that bicycle.

Before You Book...

A few things people usually ask

What if it rains? Collapse

If it is not a severe downpour with lightning, the captain may fish (some of our best catches come in inclement weather). However, if I see that the weather is dangerous (lightning, strong winds) or we are not able to fish, we will gladly reschedule or refund your deposit. The guide will make the call…

What type of boat will we be on? Expand

We fish off of a 2022 Majek 25+Xtreme bay boat powered by a Mercury Pro XS 300 4 stroke engine. We always maintain all of our gear in top shape to ensure you have a quality trip.

What should I bring? Expand

In order to be prepared for all weather, it is suggested that you bring clothing appropriate for the forecasted weather during your trip. Sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses (a spare if you have it), hat (a spare), rain gear, snacks and drinks/water, any medication you may require before we get back to the dock.

How long is a trip? Expand

A typical trip lasts from first safe light until we limit, you are tired of catching or, we have been on the water 6-7 hours. We strive to make sure you have a fulfilling trip, but we have to call it around the 7-hour mark.

What is provided with the trip? Expand

The following are provided as part of your excursion: rods and reels (spinning) for use on the charter, live and/or artificial baits, all fish cleaned and bagged.

What type of tackle will we use? Expand

We use Diawa reels and rods for all of our charters - 3000 series BackBay reels and Tatula XT Spinning rods. We fish braided line on all of our gear, opting for Seaguar TACTX braided line in 20lb Test. You will ALWAYS fish with top-notch gear with no exceptions. I never want equipment failure to…
